My Bucket List | For the BIG 3-0!

BucketList30_PostCover

A big mile stone is approaching for me. I'm turning 30 in T-minus six months.  To be honest, I'm a bit anxious about the whole milestone. In reality, it's just another day marking that I'm older and won't feel different than any day in my 29s. But I'm leaving my 20s and there's a lot of thoughts going around in my head about where I should be at in my life, things I should've accomplished, and money I should be earning.

I’m still figuring it out. That's what gets me anxious.  Somewhere in my mid-twenties The concept of setting and reaching goals finally clicked for me.  I've set goals throughout my whole life, but they've always seemed to be assigned or coaxed out of me as either a school assignment or some other cursory activity. Somewhere along the way, I found value in it because it wasn't something forced upon me to do. Rather it became a mechanism that actually produced changes in my life that I wanted. Moving to Wisconsin to continue my education, getting a job in Chicago, moving halfway around the world to become an English teacher, and touring through Thailand and Europe for three months.  It all happened because I decided to do those things and I set up ways to accomplish them.

So, as it has worked for me in the past, I'll apply goal setting once again before turning 30. I've been thinking often about the things I have never done in my life. Heck, the first time I ever went camping was when I lived in South Korea.  In the spirit of goal setting, here’s my “bucket” list of things I want to do before turning the big 3-0.

In no particular order:

#1 -  Learn To Scuba Dive

I've been thinking about this for a while.  Every time I research a place for travels there always seems to be a beautiful location to scuba dive. Feels like I'm missing out. I'm planning to go to Iceland for my birthday. There's a place called the Silfra fissure where the North American and European continents meet. I could snorkel in between them but think that scuba diving between them would be an even more extraordinary experience.

#2 - Go Fishing

I've never been fishing in all my 29 years on this earth. My family is not outdoorsy people and just never had the opportunity to do it.  Better late than never, I (cliched ly) say.

#3 - Run a 5k or 10k

I. Hate. Running.

However!  I do want to try to run at least a 5k. I'm pretty sure I could do a 10k, physically. It's more mental than anything. I'm not as crazy as wanting to do a marathon and all the power to those people that do. There are so many races to choose from in my area that I don't have an excuse not to.

#4 - Learn To Drive Manual Transmission

I feel like automatic transmission or rather the prevalence of it in vehicles is a North American thing. Everywhere else I've been to in the world, manual transmissions are the standard. And as far as car rentals are concerned, manuals are always cheaper than automatics.  Just the way it is, I guess. So, in the spirit of convenience and frugality, I want to learn how to drive manually.

#5 - Go Gambling

I've played slots before and I've played poker with friends, but I've never been to a casino and sat down at a card table. Win or lose, it's something I've never done and would like to experience it.

#6 - Visit A State I've Never Been Before

There are MANY states I've yet to travel to so this shouldn't be difficult.  I don't count states I've driven through on my way to another state or the states I've only been inside the airport in. I want to visit a new state, travel within that state, and experience some things I can't in my home state. Such as skiing or snowboarding if I go to a mountainous area. Florida is as flat as a pancake.

…..now I want some pancakes.

#7 - Learn To Surf

I've lived in Florida for a good 16 years. I have no idea how in all that time I've never tried surfing before. It is what it is. I don't know if the surfer’s life is for me, but…Time to learn!

#8 - Ride In A Hot Air Balloon

Something that's been a passing thought of, “that would be cool to do.” And then never actually do it.

#9 - Go To A Jaguars Game

The Jacksonville Jaguars. Not the greatest team in the league. In fact, I think they're one of the lowest ranking teams, but they are my city’s team. Watching a game at the stadium is a different experience than front the TV.  Again, 16 years here and never been to one game. Shame on me. Time for that to change.

#10 - Attend A Fruit Festival

Because why not?  I like fruit. I also like festivals. Put them together and sounds like a yummy time.

#11 - Do Something That Scares the Bejesus Out of Me

There are the obvious ones like skydiving, bungee jumping, or another adrenaline-filled escapade. It could be anything really, but it has to be something that petrified me just to think about doing.

#12 - Become Proficient

Jack of all trades, master of none - so the saying goes. I dabble in a lot of new things but never seem to rise to a proficient level. I would like to focus more and develop my skills in one of the following: photography (night time specifically), javascript, or Japanese.

#13 - See the Milky Way

I always see the beautiful night time photographs of the Milky Way but I've never seen it in real life. I want to go to an area that has little to no light pollution with a camera and just stare at the sky. Maybe camp under the stars.

#14 - Bicycle Long Distance

The longest I've done is 80km. I did, however, do it in one day. I want to go on a biking trip that's at least long enough to require me to camp out for a night.

#15 - Brew Beer

I love drinking beer, so why not learn how to brew it. Maybe I'll gain a new appreciation for the beverage.
